Exproof HMI in Fuel Terminals: Zone 1 Operator Panel Selection Guide

Selecting an operator panel for a fuel terminal, LPG/LNG loading rack or refinery utility unit is not the same as picking a “rugged tablet”. Where flammable vapour or gas may be present, equipment must match the Zone and be explosion-proof (exproof).

1) Zone logic (practical)

  • Zone 0 / 1 / 2 (gas/vapour): continuous, occasional or infrequent explosive atmosphere.
  • Pump pads, manifolds and tanker loading arms are often treated as Zone 1 or adjacent to Zone 1.
  • Even if the mount point is argued as “safe area”, glands and sealing must not break Zone integrity.

2) Why a standard industrial HMI is not enough

IP65 fronts and wide temperature ratings do not replace ATEX/IECEx enclosure certification. Fans, USB/HDMI openings and commercial connectors do not manage ignition risk.

3) Technical checklist for exproof HMIs

  1. Certificate wording: ATEX and/or IECEx, target Zone (e.g. Zone 1), gas group and temperature class.
  2. Protection concept: Ex d / Ex e / Ex t matching process and installation method.
  3. HMI role: touch operator panel, SCADA/PLC view, local manual intervention.
  4. I/O & networking: Ethernet/serial/video only via approved glands/adapters.
  5. Maintenance: cover-open procedures and hot-work rules inside the Zone.

4) Typical field architecture

Exproof panel PC on the loading skid; fixed barcode/RFID at the edge for product/vehicle checks; safe-area SCADA in the control room. If operators stay inside the Zone, the local UI must be exproof end-to-end.
